Title: The Bodies On The Beach by James Hayward

Description: This book covers not only the ‘black propaganda’ put out by Britain’s intelligence services to make it seem that a German invasion had been launched and defeated at sea (largely by flame warfare methods), but is also the story of the Petroleum Warfare Department and the fire ships of Operation Lucid. The author provides fascinating details of Shingle Street and the myths of the bodies of German soldiers being washed up on the beach there and elsewhere as rumours began to circulate in late autumn of 1940 that a German raiding force had attempted to land somewhere in England. At least eight bodies were found between Hythe and St Mary’s Bay over 3 days in September where they were carried by truck to a field west of New Romney.

Author: James Hayward is the pseudonym of James Nice, born 6 January 1966 in Essex, English writer on military and modern art history. He was educated at the University of Glasgow prior to working in publishing and as a solicitor. His other books include Shingle Street, Myths and Legends of the First World War and Myths and Legends of the Second World War.
