| Title:
The
Franco Years by Jose Yglesias |
|
Description:
This
hard to find book gives a portrait of the Spanish people
during the thirty six years of Fascist rule under Francisco
Franco. It is presented in personal viewpoints from the
people who lived through it and includes Remedios, who
worked for a Franco supporter as a servant and stole food
for her imprisoned brother (who had his death sentence
commuted an hour after his death); Oriol Regas, a young
Catalan who turned concerts into political events, Sergio
Albert who rose from poverty to affluence as a homosexual
courtesan; the Communist miner Arcadio, who attempted
suicide after being tortured and jailed for his role in
organising a strike and many other stories which are equally
moving.
