and b & w many of which are previously unpublished.
The author discusses chapter by chapter topics such as
sex, weather, children, censorship and propaganda. She
illustrates the camaraderie and fear of bombing, the freedom
of women, the efforts of the young to participate and
the misery and chaos of daily life. Anne Valery conveys
what it was really like on the Home Front from her research
and from her personal experiences as a young woman.

Anne
Valery has led a very fascinating life, after school she
went into the American army and later joined British Intelligence.
In 1945 she worked for BBC radio eventually moving into
films where she appeared in about 24 of them. In 1952 she
went to sea as an assistant engineer on a boat. Later arrested
in Spain for anti-Franco activities she escaped and returned
to theatre and cabaret. She was involved in the Greek resistance
during the Colonels Coup. In 1970 she wrote an account of
her childhood. There followed 50 television plays including
Tenko which she was co-author. |
