In
this book the author has assembled sixty-five lively accounts
most of which are from newspaper articles of the time
and the remainder from magazines of stories of Texas and
its people from 1830 1860. Beginning with the impression
of the land itself, as it appeared to one traveller, who
came upon Karankawa Indians, and another newcomer who
spent four lost days on the Texas prairie. It then covers
various topics which include the Texas tarantula to the
wild horse chases and riding contests. It then moves onto
the Texas people as seen through the eyes of the European
travellers of the time and then covers amongst many other
topics the legends and myths of the time.

| Author:
The author
was a native of Wheeler, Texas. He attended Oklahoma State
University and he later obtained a Ph.D. He was head of
English at the Texas A & M University from 1962
1966. He was a frequent contributor to the Texas Folklore
Society. His previous publications include The Journal of
Kate Stone 1861-1868 and A Texas Surgeon in the C.S.A. (1957). |
