| Title:
The
Middle East Commandos by Charles Messenger |
|
Description:
The
Middle East Commandos were raised in the late summer of
1940 in Egypt. They comprised of numbers 50, 51 and 52
Commando who were to play a largely unsung role in the
Middle East. While no. 50 and 52 were later amalgamated
and took part in the battle for Crete and were drawn from
regulars and yeomanry units, number 51 was composed mainly
of Palestinians both Jew and Arab. No.50 could boast a
troop of Spaniards. The story ranges from the North African
coast in late 1940, from action in Abyssinia and Eritrea,
to the abortive raid on Castelorizzo and then to the tragedy
of Crete which was to their eventual disbandment. The
history of the Middle East Commandos is a mixture of humour,
gallantry and pathos, and strikingly illustrates the misuse
of Special Forces.
