this book are the memoirs of Captain Charles Cobden Stormont
Gibbs MC who served in the 4th Suffolk Regiment from 1915
to the end of the First World War. He first saw action
at the height of the Battle of the Somme in the summer
of 1916 and survived against the odds. He also took part
in the Battle of Arras in 1917, the Third Battle of Ypres
and the retreat in 1918. His memoirs are edited by Richard
Devonald-Lewis.

The editor
Richard Devonald-Lewis was born in 1940 and educated at
Gayhurst Preparatory School. He was a regular Royal Marines
Officer but was invalided out in his twenties. He has stood
as Conservative candidate for parliament and in his spare
time has acted as a guide for battlefield tours. |
