| Title:
The
Queens Man by Humphrey Drummond |
|
Description:
According
to the author few people have been so constantly reviled
and misrepresented throughout the centuries as James Hepburn,
Fourth Earl of Bothwell. Humphrey Drummond casts a different
picture. Bothwell appears as a figure of hope in the unsettled
1560s. He was a firm supporter of the Queen Dowager
of Scotland and, on her death, the beautiful Mary Queen
of Scots. Surrounded by lies, spies, accusations and increasing
illness, Bothwell was often the man whom Mary could turn
to for help against he treacherous half-brother and the
rebel Lords Moray and Morton. Bothwell was imprisoned,
exiled, betrayed and nearly murdered and along with Mary
stood accused of killing her husband Lord Darnley. He
risked his honour and life and vast possessions for her
and lost them all. The picture of Bothwell that emerges
is not of a saint but through this detailed study it shows
a remarkable man who was a defender of Mary Queen of Scots
and who can rightly take his place beside the great heroes
in history.
