| Title:
The
Railway Man by Eric Lomax |
|
Description:
Eric
Lomax in 1930s Scotland was a lonely boy who had
a devotion to the railways; he was a spotter of trains
in the glorious age of steam. In 1941 he was sent to Malaya
as a member of the Royal Signals where he was to be taken
prisoner at the fall of Singapore. He was put to work
on the Burma-Siam railway which cost the lives of hundreds
of thousands of men. While there he assisted in the building
of a radio to follow the news, but the discovery of the
radio brought on two years of dreadful torture and starvation.
Among the Japanese was an English speaking soldier attached
to the secret police and Lomax was never to forget his
voice. After the war Lomax spent half a century alone
with his experiences. Late in life by a miracle he discovered
that his interrogator was alive and found out where he
was. This incredible book describes a life eventually
saved from bitterness as the two were eventually to meet.
