| Title:
The
Moonlight War The Story of Clandestine Operations
in South-East Asia, 1944-5 by Terence OBrien |
|
Description:
This
thrilling and controversial war memoir is a first-hand
account of the clandestine operations which took place
against the Japanese in South-East Asia in 1944-5. The
author was in command of a Dakota flight based in Jessore,
from which missions were flown throughout Burma, Siam,
Indo-China and northern Malaya. Through a wealth of brilliantly
told stories both in the air and on the ground, the author
reveals that these operations were, in the main a scandalous
waste of life and resources. Plans were so shrouded in
secrecy that they tended to be exclusive and reckless.
There were instances of duplication, long perilous flights
occasioned by the jealousy and isolation of different
secret outfits. The difficulties of making contact with
SOE and MI6 units in enemy occupied territory along with
the hazards of terrain and bad weather. It is an unnoticed
fact that the casualties in the aircrew were far higher
than the men they dropped. This book is an authentic formal
record of the subject which has remained virtually untreated.
