| Title:
An
Introduction to Eighteenth Century France by John Lough |
|
Description:
This
book initially gives an account of France between 1715
and 1789; it then goes onto the economic and social history
of that period arranged in chapters, on the land and the
peasants, the towns and the two privileged orders, the
clergy and nobility. The next three chapters then deals
with the Regent and Fleury, the reign of Louis XV, and
Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, it traces the history
of France from the death of Louis XIV to the meeting of
the Estates-General in 1789, laying particular stress
on the aristocratic revolt and its undermining
of Absolutism. The next two chapters then give a background
to the literature and the thought of the period. In the
final chapter it summarises the changes brought about
by the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period, and brings
out their influence on French life down to our day.
