Title: The Battle Of The River Plate by Dudley Pope

Description: The Allied pursuit of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee in the winter of 1939 was the first major naval campaign of WWII, culminating in the Battle of the River Plate and the Graf Spee’s eventual scuttling off Montevideo. In this enthralling and well-researched account, the author describes this famous campaign based on the accounts of the participants on both sides. The commerce-raiding cruise of the German ship, the hunt for her by the Allied navies, and the brutal battle between her and Commodore Harwood’s three cruisers the Ajax, Exeter and Achilles off the River Plate on the 13 December 1939 are vividly described. Despite crippling the Exeter, the Graf Spee’s own damage forced Captain Langsdorff to take shelter in the neutral Uruguayan port of Montevideo, and there then followed a classic disinformation campaign by the British, which drove Langsdorff to scuttle his ship, persuaded that an overwhelming force lay in wait for him over the horizon.

Author: Dudley Pope served in the Merchant Navy during WWII as a cadet until wounded in the Battle of the Atlantic. He worked in Fleet Street, for 17 years resigning in 1959 to become a full time writer living in Italy. In 1965 he moved to the West Indies where he lived until his death in 1997. His other works include ‘Life in Nelson’s Navy’, ‘The Great Gamble’ and ‘The Black Ship’.
