| Title:
English
Monasteries In The Middle Ages by G.H. Cook |
|
Description:
This
book covers the monastic establishments from the seventh
century to the sixteenth century. The author commences
with the origin and ideals of the monastic life and covers
various orders. The planning and building of the monasteries
is shown against the background of the functions which
they were expected to fulfil. They were expected to be
places of hospitality and with privileges of sanctuary,
as well as the observances of the Church and the rules
of the Order. When the monastic system came to an end,
The Royal Commissioners were given instructions
to raze the buildings to the ground. So within a few years
the destruction of so many great and noble buildings was
complete.
