Elizur
Shaw who recorded his experiences in this book was born
on April 5, 1826 in Copenhagen, New York. In 1848, along
with his brothers and sister and mother they came
west and settled in Oneida, Illinois until his mother
died in the 1850s. The Shaw family then left their
home in Illinois in 1862 and while on their long journey
along the Oregon Trail, destination Seattle, Washington
Territory, they lost all oft heir possessions in an onslaught
by the Indians. After being settled down in Unionville,
Nevada, by the wagon train that brought them from the
Mormon Settlement where they were taken after their ordeal
with the Indians they continued their journey. This book
describes their experiences from a personal perspective.
